Google is expanding AI-powered shopping in Canada by introducing UCP-powered direct checkout in Google Search’s AI Mode and the Gemini app.
Sabrina Geremia, Vice President and Country Managing Director at Google Canada, announced this on November 4, 2026. The update lets Canadian shoppers buy products directly from eligible retailers while researching through Google’s AI interfaces.
Google says 59% of Canadian holiday shoppers plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season.
The rollout is powered by Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to connect AI agents, retailers, and payment providers throughout the shopping journey.
The initial launch includes lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Simons.

How Does Direct Checkout Work in Google AI Mode?
Previously, shoppers using Google to discover products generally had to visit a retailer’s website to complete their purchase.
With the new UCP-powered checkout, eligible shoppers can complete purchases directly within AI Mode and the Gemini app.
Google is using Google Pay to process payments. Shoppers can use their existing payment methods and shipping information saved in Google Wallet.
However, retailers remain the seller of record. This means the retailer continues to handle the actual sale and can customize the checkout integration according to its business requirements.
Google also plans to introduce additional capabilities, including loyalty reward support, in the coming months.
What Is Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
The Universal Commerce Protocol is an open standard developed by Google with industry partners to support agentic commerce.
It provides a common framework that allows AI agents, businesses, and payment providers to communicate without requiring separate custom integrations for every interaction.
UCP supports different stages of the shopping journey, including:
- Product discovery and recommendations.
- Product selection and comparison.
- Checkout and payment processing.
- Post-purchase support.
Google introduced UCP earlier in 2026 as part of its broader effort to make shopping more accessible through AI-powered experiences.
The Canadian rollout brings these capabilities to more shoppers through Google Search and Gemini.
Google Plans to Expand UCP Through Merchant Center
Google is also preparing to make UCP integration easier for retailers.
Starting in 2027, Google plans to make simplified UCP integration available directly through Merchant Center. This will allow more retailers to enable direct checkout and other shopping capabilities for their product listings across AI Mode and Gemini.
Currently, the Canadian rollout is limited to eligible retailers and select Shopify merchants. The Merchant Center integration is expected to make participation easier for a broader range of businesses.
What Does This Mean for eCommerce SEO?
This update could change how customers discover products and complete purchases through Google.
Traditionally, eCommerce SEO has focused on bringing users to product pages through organic search results. However, AI-powered shopping experiences are bringing product discovery and checkout closer together.
This makes product information and Merchant Center data increasingly important for retailers.
Businesses should pay attention to:
- Product feed quality: Keep product titles, descriptions, prices, and availability accurate.
- Product information: Provide clear specifications, features, and attributes that help AI systems understand products.
- Merchant Center readiness: Monitor Google’s UCP integration updates and eligibility requirements.
- AI search visibility: Monitor how your products appear in AI Mode and Gemini as Google’s AI-powered shopping experiences expand
This does not mean traditional eCommerce SEO is becoming irrelevant. Instead, retailers may need to optimize for both website discovery and AI-driven shopping experiences.
The Bigger Shift: Google Is Moving Beyond Product Discovery
Google’s UCP-powered checkout expansion signals a bigger change in how people shop online.
AI Mode and Gemini are moving beyond product research and recommendations. They are becoming platforms where shoppers can discover products, compare options, and complete purchases.
For eCommerce businesses, this creates another reason to invest in accurate product data, Merchant Center optimization, and AI search visibility. Product discovery may increasingly happen inside AI platforms, even when retailers remain responsible for the actual sale.
