Google is expanding Generative UI to AI Overviews, bringing interactive experiences directly into the traditional Google Search results.
The capability was previously introduced in AI Mode. Google has now started rolling it out in AI Overviews, allowing Search to generate more than just text-based answers for certain queries.
What Google Announced
Google said Generative UI can now build custom visual layouts, interactive tools, and simulations on the fly inside AI Overviews.
The rollout to AI Overviews has started in English. Full availability is expected “within the coming weeks,” though Google has not shared a specific completion date.
The company also noted that the rollout is ongoing. Not all users or queries will see generated interfaces right away.
This follows Google’s I/O 2026 promise to make Generative UI free for everyone in Search that summer.
In its August 19, 2026 blog post, Google confirmed: “Generative UI capabilities have launched globally in English in AI Mode and have started rolling out as well in AI Overviews.”
Google also described the goal behind the feature: “Search can now generate custom tools and simulations to help you see complex topics in action.”
Rollout Status of Various Features
| Feature | Surface | Status |
| Generative UI | AI Mode | Launched globally in English |
| Generative UI | AI Overviews | Started rolling out, no completion date given |
| Practice quizzes | AI Overviews and AI Mode | Globally available in English, free of charge |
| Lens step-by-step coaching | Answer returned as an AI Overview | Rolling out globally in English over the coming weeks |
| Notebooks | AI Mode | Rolling out over the coming days in 180+ countries in English, local languages to follow |
Note: Status is based on data last checked on August 25, 2026.
Prompts You Can Try
You can test Generative UI in AI Overviews with prompts that ask for interactive or visual explanations. Examples include:
- “Show me an interactive pH scale”
- “Give me a calculator for compound interest”
- “Create a quiz on photosynthesis for Class 10”
- “Show a step-by-step simulation of how a lever works”
- “Generate a timeline of the French Revolution I can explore”
These types of queries are more likely to trigger custom tools, simulations, or visual interfaces inside AI Overviews.
I have tested these prompts myself for Generative UI in AI Overviews, but the rollout has not reached me yet. These prompts work fine in Google AI Mode. You can try them in Google Search to check whether this AI Overview rollout is available for you.

Note: This is the Generative UI in Google’s AI Mode. Google is rolling out the same Generative UI features in AI Overviews.
What This Means for SEO
For SEO and content teams, this move signals a shift from text-only answers to richer, tool-like experiences in the SERP.
Google’s internal testing shows that generated interfaces in AI Overviews can sometimes outperform top traditional results in head-to-head comparisons for certain query types.
This is especially relevant for education, health, finance, and other “how-to” or concept-heavy topics. Writing good content that can be adapted into interactive formats, such as calculators, quizzes, and visual explainers, is likely to benefit.
Google has also pointed to its generative AI reporting in Search Console, which now provides impressions and page-level data for AI features in Search. This can help publishers track where their content appears when Generative UI is triggered.
Key Takeaway
The bigger shift is that search is moving from text-only answers to app-like, interactive experiences inside the SERP.
For SEO, this means optimizing not just for rankings, but for content that can power interactive tools and visual explanations within AI Overviews.
