Google AI Overview Falsely Reports Bakery Is Closing: What Went Wrong?

A Google AI Overview recently told users that Anna Mae’s Bakery and Restaurant in Millbank, Ontario, was closing on July 31, but the business wasn’t closing at all.

The AI-generated summary had confused the Canadian bakery with another business of the same name in Illinois that is actually shutting down. The mistake quickly spread, leaving customers wondering whether the popular bakery was really closing.

What Happened?

The error surfaced over the weekend of July 18 and 19, 2026. According to CBC News, bakery owner Amanda Herrfort first learned about the error after someone sent her a screenshot of Google’s AI Overview while she was on her way to a wedding.

Soon after, customers began calling, emailing, and visiting the bakery to ask whether the closure was real.

The AI summary had incorrectly merged information from two different businesses with the same name, creating a false announcement that the Ontario bakery would close at the end of July.

How the AI Mix-Up Happened

According to reports, Google’s AI confused the Canadian bakery with another business of the same name in Illinois that is actually closing.

The AI-generated summary combined information from the two businesses, causing the incorrect closure notice to appear in search results.

The incident highlights one of the biggest challenges facing AI-powered search: distinguishing between businesses with similar names while accurately interpreting information from multiple sources.

Google Responds to the Error

Google acknowledged the mistake after it received attention.

A spokesperson from Google told CBC News, “The vast majority of AI overviews are high quality and meet our high bar for helpfulness and accuracy.”, but acknowledged that mistakes can occur.

The company said such issues may happen when there isn’t enough high-quality information available online and that it uses these incidents to improve AI Overviews over time.

Why This Is a Wake-Up Call for Businesses

For local businesses, even a small AI error can have significant consequences.

In this case, customers called, emailed, and visited the bakery to verify whether it was actually closing. A single inaccurate AI summary created confusion and could have affected customer trust and business revenue.

As more people rely on AI-generated answers instead of clicking through to websites, businesses have less control over how their information is presented. Similar concerns are also growing among publishers as AI search changes how users discover content.

How to Protect Your Business from AI Errors

This case is a reminder that businesses should actively monitor how AI platforms describe their brand.

Regularly checking Google Search, Google AI Overviews, your Google Business Profile, and other AI search tools can help identify inaccurate information before it affects customers.

Maintaining accurate business information across your website and online listings also increases the chances that AI systems reference the correct details.

Key Takeaway

Google AI Overviews are becoming a major part of how people search for information, but this incident shows they are still not immune to errors.

For businesses, AI visibility is no longer just about being found; it’s also about making sure the information AI presents is accurate. As AI search continues to evolve, monitoring your online presence will become just as important as optimizing it.
