Google Tests New AI Buttons on Homepage

Google is testing a new desktop homepage layout that puts AI tools directly on the homepage.

In the test, some users are seeing three new buttons: Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm. These shortcuts appear where the traditional “Google Search” and “I’m Feeling Lucky” buttons were previously displayed.

The updated homepage also retains several existing tools, including AI Mode, Google Lens, voice search, and the plus icon for uploading files or images.

What Are the New Buttons

The three new options point users toward tasks that go beyond traditional keyword searches.

  • Create images provides access to Google’s image-generation capabilities.
  • Ask about files lets users work with uploaded files and ask questions about them.
  • Brainstorm provides an entry point for using Google’s AI to explore ideas.

Many of these capabilities were already available in the Google Search app. Google is now testing them directly on its desktop homepage.

Google Confirms It Is a Test

Google VP of Product Robby Stein confirmed the change on August 11.

We’re doing a small test on desktop to help people discover more things to do with Search.”

Stein also clarified that the core search experience has not changed. Users can still enter a query and press Enter to search as usual.

What This Means for Google Search

The test does not remove traditional search. However, it does show how Google is changing the way users are introduced to Search.

Instead of presenting the homepage primarily as a place to find webpages, Google is testing it as a starting point for AI-powered tasks, similar to how Google Images recently updated its homepage toward proactive, personalized discovery.

The test comes as Google continues expanding AI Mode and other AI-powered features across Search.

For now, the new homepage buttons are only part of a limited desktop test. Google has not said whether the design will eventually roll out to everyone.
