Google recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of Google Images with the biggest update to the Image Search homepage.
Google has replaced the long-standing clean search box with an image gallery. Now, Google Images will show a gallery of images on the homepage, much like Pinterest.
According to Brad Kellett (Senior Engineering Director, Search), this new feature is designed to shift search from text-based queries to visual discovery. Users will see a feed of images tailored to their interests, searches, saved collections, and browsing data.
What’s New in Google Images?
Previously, when someone opened images.google.com, they saw a Google Images logo and a search bar.
After the update, the homepage will show a personalised gallery of images that will update in real time as per your searches, saved collection, and browsing activities.
You can also save your images while browsing. This saved collection will appear at the top, making it easier to search newer ones and revisit favourite ones
Google said users can still perform traditional searches such as text, voice, or Google Lens. Those features will remain the same; just the homepage will now show images related to what the user has explored in the past.
Why This Change Matters
This update to the Google Image Search reflects that the platform is no longer waiting for the user to type the query. Instead, it proactively recommends images.
For SEO professionals and publishers, it’s highly important, as this can create a new opportunity for image visibility. As a result, the value of high-quality and visually appealing images becomes more crucial.
When This New Update Will Be Visible
Google keeps introducing new features and updates, but rollouts don’t always reach every user or region simultaneously.
Similarly, Google is planning to roll out this update gradually. In a few weeks, this change will roll out on desktop in the US. After that, they will expand to the other regions.
Go to images.google.com. If it’s still showing the same old homepage, the update hasn’t reached you yet.
Google Image Search was launched in 2001 and has indexed billions of images. Now, on the 25th anniversary, this launch reflects the platform’s focus on personalised AI-driven image discovery.
